I agree completely with LtCol Tom Hayden's viewpoint on the increase of private intelligence firms influence in the coming years. One clear example is the Private Military Company.
Private Military Companies (PMC)seemed to crop up out of nowhere with the outbreak of hostilities in Iraq. It did not take long for them to grab the headlines either. Remember those images of the chared bodies hung from the bridge in Iraq. Those were members of a PMC who were tasked with escorting supplise through enemy held areas in Iraq. This example is a fine one to show just how alone these private contractors really are. To the best of my knowledge it was a convoy protection team of 4-5 members. They were stopped by what looked to be an Iraqi police checkpoint and told to detour through an enemy held town. Right then it would have been nice to have access to the wealth of knowledge held by the military intelligence agencies. The protection team had to make a critical decision under pressure and they made the wrong one. They believed the police at the checkpoint and thought it was safe to travel through the town. They were heading right for a kill zone. They must have been overwhelmed with the sheer number of attackers. A four or five man protection detail can only hold their ground for so long. Most likely the attack started with a RPG attack. Then automatic weapons fire most likely centered on the first and trailing convoy vehicles. If you stop in a KILL ZONE you will die....no ifs ands or buts. This team had no back up whatsoever. I am sure they put up a valiant battle but four men can only do so much. In comparison a military convoy would have air support, more than likely a quick reaction force would accompany the convoy on its journey. Hummvee's with 50 cal's would also proceed and trail any convoy. In hostile areas such a Iraq you need to be able to outgun your enemy in order to survive. This is one area which the US military has no problem doing.
Private intelligence companies were also central to the problems in the Abu Garab Prison problem. Private interrogators were hired to help extract critical information from suspected insurgents in order to gain an upper hand in the area of tactical intelligence in terms of the insurgency. The problem arose as to who is responsible for the work of the private intelligence workers. Is the military responsible for their actions or are the PMC themselves responsible for their employees actions. These are all issues which crop up when you mix the private sector intelligence with the military sector intelligence.
I looked for Thomas Haden's article and could not find it can you direct me to the addy... Thanks
"What a stupendous, what an incomprehensible machine is man! Who can endure toil, famine, stripes, imprisonment & death itself in vindication of his own liberty, and the next moment . . . inflict on his fellow men a bondage, one hour of which is fraught with more misery than ages of that which he rose in rebellion to oppose." Thomas Jefferson
Hey Blackice as I wait to hear back about where I can read the article I have some questions about your post. Is PCM an individual company or a categorical reference to the industry? I watched a Front Line documentary on Backwater and the job they are providing at a high premium in Iraq with regard to convoy, and client protection. It was Backwaters guys that were killed in Flaugia which then caused a complete change in plans for the regular military who resented the fact that they had to avenge these highly paid mercenaries who broke from their standard of operational safety and died as a result. The hasty attack by regular troops was called off after it was clear that it was going to take a much larger force in order to show the bad guys who's the boss. This is where I see problems with companies like Backwater, Kaki and others who actually put regular troops in danger as a result of poor decisions and lack of coordination with command. They have no accountability and answer to no one other than to the bunch paying their bill. Private interests don't mix well with political military incretions. But hey don't look now because private corporate armies are coming due to the fact that our country 9 trillion in debt and growing will be unable to fund an army much longer. Soon if your interests clash with the corporate world desires you just might be labeled a "rebel" or an "insurgent" and shot while watching Monday night football... Abu Garab serves to show us the morality of these "contractors" as they use grunts to do their dirty work while coming off as sanctioned by Lex Luther ... I mean Rums field. Don't get me wrong I think who ever did the 911 job should get their head bashed in the worst way... really I do! Just let’s get the right perps... what yah think?
Noncom,
You should be able to access the article in the feature Article section of this site.
As for the PMC that term is a generic term used for the many vaired private companies which provide armies of hire. Blackwater is just one of many of these companies operating in the Iraqi Op area.
If you check out the latests OSAC ( Overseas Security Advisory Council) site news today you will see even more contractors have checked in to that smoke shak in the sky.
